In September 2009, I attended GIFTS films on Galiano Island. I had a great learning experience taking the Media intensive course, and produced this video with 2 other producers.
The outline of our film, when we started was:
Conflict
People opening up about things they don't normally talk about. Conflict between comfort and fear and moving towards fear when your instincts are telling you not to. Taking the leap forward.
Social Significance
Everyone feels fear and discomfort - you don't need to feel alone or weird about your own issues. The world can be an uncomfortable place and it is more about how we each deal with our own discomforts.
Motivation
Learn more about other people so that we can learn more about ourselves.
Style
Use lighting and sound and pace to reflect either comfort or fear. Use a style which helps create intimacy between the audience and the people being interviewed, make people feel comfortable and open. Juxtapose the comfort of familiar surroundings of an interview room, with familiar items, and walls close by with high contrast fears enacted.
Genre
Participatory
Tone
Starts off serene, turning point as fears get introduced, fears detailed and enacted at climax, with hints of optimism and lessons learned at end.
Ending
If we want to make changes in our life, we have to get out of our comfort zone. Sunset.
